Please Be Advised that this is a 7 semester degree. Regardless of how many credits you have already earned, if you have not taken Art Studio (A-S) courses previously, it will take you 7 semesters (3 1/2 years) to finish the degree. As a result we will not accept anyone into the program with more than 60 earned credit hours and no coursework in the studio arts.

Welcome to the University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies Digital Media Design application.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Digital Media Design prepares students to create images and artifacts for existing and emerging creative industries and practices. This degree can lead to a variety of careers in art and design, allowing flexibility for students looking to pursue their interests and hone their skills for a variety of careers and applications. 



Existing within the School of Art and Visual Studies, this technically and conceptually rigorous program engages art and design as concurrent creative practices. Here, students can explore multiple areas of interest, including graphic design, digital drawing and illustration, photography, video, animation, digital fabrication, programming for the web and robotics, and print media. In addition, students engage with other arts and academic areas to inform and inspire their creative work.

As of July 1, 2019, the Digital Media Design major is a competitive Selective-Admission program. This means that all students interested in this major must submit this application and be accepted into the program before they can declare the major. Please be thoughtful and take time when preparing and submitting your application.


A faculty committee will review applications following each round of deadlines.

Application deadlines

For Changes of Major within UK and adding Digital Media Design as a second major, the deadlines are:
October 1 is the priority deadline for Spring semester applications. 

Applications submitted between October 2 and November 30 will be notified before the end of the Fall semester for Spring admission, but applications submitted before October 1 will have priority for the limited number of spaces we have available.


March 1 is the priority application deadline for the Fall and Summer semesters
.

Applications submitted between March 2 and May 1 will be notified before the end of the Spring semester for Fall admission, but applications submitted before March 1 will have priority for the limited number of spaces we have available.


Applications submitted after May 1 will only be considered for Spring admission.

FAQs for the Digital Media Design major Application Process
Q: How do I apply for entrance into the Digital Media Design program? 

A: Using this form, follow all instructions on submitting your application.


Q: What information do I need to provide for the application? 

A: Along with general information such as name and address, you will need to provide:

  • Your unweighted UK GPA
  • SAT or ACT scores (if you have them)
  • Responses to three writing prompts
  • If you have taken any classes at the School of Art and Visual Studies you will need to include the name of a current UK School of Art and Visual Studies instructor who can speak to your work ethic and class success.
  • Optional letters of references. If you submit letters of reference they should be written by a non-family member, non-UK SA/VS professor, who can speak to your abilities, character, and potential to succeed. This letter should also indicate your relationship to the writer and how long you have known one another.
  • A portfolio of between 3 and 10 images. Work does not have to be from a class.


Q: What should be included in the required written statement of intent? 

A: You will answer several questions that will guide you through the statement of intent. The Committee would like to know your future plans and interest in the field of digital media design.


Q: What are the minimum GPA and ACT/SAT (if you have them) scores required for the application? 

A: The minimum GPA and minimum ACT/SAT scores will fluctuate depending on the number and quality of the other applications in a given application cycle. This is a competitive program and standards will vary during each application cycle. (If due to Covid-19 you do not have ACT/SAT scores you will be able to indicate that in your application form and will not be penalized)


Q: Is there a minimum grade or GPA I must maintain while in the Digital Media Design program?

A: Yes. As a Digital Media Design major, you must earn a “C” grade or better in all major requirement courses. Grades will be reviewed at the end of each Spring semester and students who have not earned the required grades will be advised to choose another major. 


Q: If my application is not accepted can I reapply?

A: Yes. You can reapply with updated statements and portfolio. Please do not submit an identical application.
